I can't really complain to much about this book. Very informative however I felt the chapters were kind of all over the place. For example when talking about the colonies one mintue you could be talking about the middle colonies and then something different and come back to more information about the middle colonies. Very easy to understand the text however.

Padded play -- wildly repetitious.

Not without talent, but his plays -- all of them -- feel so padded. This being the most egregious example. So much repetition, characters merely restating what the other has said with exclamation points at the end. (Mamet does this better -- here it just feels needlessly shrill and silly.) It's a kind of weak stunt, the conceit of a play, but what is painfully obvious is that Zeller needs to draw it out so the entire thing amounts to what is known in the trade as a "full evening of the theater," so people would feel they got their money's worth, sitting there for an hour and a half as opposed to 45 minutes, which is probably what this should appropriately be. Not remotely deep and something you'll forget ten minutes after seeing it.

Damien Keown is Reader in Buddhism at Goldsmiths College, University of London. His books on Buddhism include Dictionary of Buddhism and Buddhist Ethics: A Very Short Introduction. He is also Editor of The Journal of Buddhist Ethics and Co-Editor of The Curzon Critical Studies in Buddhism series.

Seeing the whole elephant

There are many introductory texts available on Buddhism, but this is by far the best I have come across. Its great strength is its scope. Other books that I have read on the subject present some or other particular variety of Buddhism, usually a Westernized version of Zen. As Keown states on page 1, "Students of Buddhism have tended to fasten onto a small part of the tradition and assume their conclusions held true about the whole". He illustrates this with the story of the blind men and the elephant (from a Buddhist scripture called the Udana) in which each man grasps a part of the elephant - tail, trunk, tusk, etc - and bases his description of the animal on that part alone. Keown attempts a broad overview of the history, development and fragmentation of Buddhist thought, from the life of the Buddha to the present day.

It is what it says - only a very short introduction - but it is packed with useful information. Keown writes well, in a lucid, concise style.

A different edition of the same book is also available in the A Brief Insight series, available here on Amazon. The text in that series is (so far as I can tell) always the same as in the VSI series, but the print is larger and there are many more illustrations, some in color. You might want to check that out if you intend to read this book, which you should.

Short and sweet

Part of a series by Oxford University Press, this book, 'Buddhism: A Very Short Introduction', follows the same format as other texts in the Very Short Introduction series -- it has fewer than 150 pages, is well indexed, has a useful glossary, accessible and enjoyable narrative, and captures the essence in a very short space the major points of its topic. There are probably nearing 100 volumes in this Very Short Introduction series (making it, ironically, not a Very Short series), but among those that I have read, this text stands out as being one of the best.
Damien Keown, of the University of London and the Royal Asiatic Society, addresses Buddhism past and present, East and West. Beginning with narrative tales the help to exhibit the principles, Keown examines in turn the major questions. First, with regard to Buddhism, is this -- is Buddhism really a religion? Often categorised as such, it is often the exception proving the rule. Many take strong spiritual and philosophical ideas from Buddhism (sometimes without knowing it) but do not subscribe the larger system of practices -- but perhaps most telling, Buddhism is a non-theistic way of being. Keown looks at seven dimensions of religion, and concludes that Buddhism does fit a broader definition of religion.
Keown proceeds from there to look at the origins of Buddhism, the life of the Buddha, ideas of karma and reincarnation, and the central ideas of the Four Noble Truths in Buddhism. From these beginnings, Buddhism branches out, the largest grouping being the Mahayana (who get their own chapter), and other spreading first across Asia and then to the rest of the world.
Like other books in this Very Short series, there are useful maps, a nice snapshot timeline, and suggestions for further reading, should the Very Short introduction not prove sufficient (and for many, this sample will leave the reader wanting more). I cannot speak too highly of this series, and of this volume on Buddhism by Keown in particular.

Found this little volume to be exactly what I hoped it would be. The author presented the information in an interesting, informative and objective manner. specifically comparing the various forms of Buddhism to one another as well as similarities and differences between Buddhism, and other Judeo-Christian religions. If one is looking for a brief introduction, this seems to be right on lline.

I really hated this book when I first started reading it

I really hated this book when I first started reading it. I instantly thought it was going to be like one of those hibbeler books that is published by Pearson. Instead, the book gave plenty of examples, plenty of theory, and gave me information I could actually apply after reading the information one time. The book goes in depth so if you read it, you will be much more likely to understand it compared to other text books. The author even goes out of his way to summarize each chapter and outlines problem solving strategies for many chapters. I am not sure if its just luck, but every Wiley published book I read is phenomenal

difficult to read with kindle desktop as you can only see one page at once. Wish they would change this because pdf versions would have allowed for that. Otherwise it is exactly the same as the copy in McMaster campus store in the winter of 2017

$200 for a stack of papers with holes punched. The text itself is fine, I like how the material is presented, but no matter how well you try to take care of it, it will be destroyed in a year or two with any considerable use. I have mine in a 3 ring binder.

Helped me get a 740

I feel that I must review the books I used to study, since other review helped me choose what to use.
I studied for the GMAT for about two months, I started with the Barron's book, which gave me a good idea of where to focus my study efforts and helped me set up a plan to address my weaknesses, I used the Official GMAT and the powerprep software as the core of my studying because it gave me real questions, which I used to make up a series of self created model tests which I took a couple of time a week (selected the type of questions to mimic the mix I would see on the test and then timed myself to duplicate the actual test) The Powerprep is great because it gives you actual CAT format tests with real questions.
In the last week I also used the Princeton Review book, which was great because it is really more about how to think about the questions than test prep., I feel that gave me an edge, but I think having exposure to lots of real questions was a big part of the success I had on the test.

A must have.

I used a total of five books in preparing for the GMAT: Barron's 13th edition, Petersons 2003 and 2004 CDs, Kaplan 2005, Nova's GMAT Prep Course 2003, and the Official Guide.

I have taken the GMAT twice. The first time I used the Barron's book and the Petersons CD and scored a 40% on math, 75% on verbal, and a 4.5 on the essay for a total score of 570. This score was unacceptable.

The second time around, I budgeted more time to study a day (around 6 hours) and for a longer time period (a month and a half). For me, I felt I had a strong background knowledge on all the required subjects, but I was not as honed on specific strategies and techniques for answering questions. My thoughts on each book:

Barron's: As a beginner, I enjoyed this book. I read the whole book and did all practice tests. They did not explain probability, sequences, and progressions questions well. In general, the math explanations were a bit sketchy. However, the word problem explanations were the best out of all the books.

Petersons: I just used the CDs and did not look at the book. After taking their adaptive practice tests, one is provided feedback which has questions divided into very difficult, difficult, etc. This is beneficial because you can see the level of difficulty at which you generally test. This is a really helpful addition that other CDs lack.

Kaplan: My least favorite book and CD. The book had very poor explanations for test questions. The book only offered general guidance for taking the test and outline common strategies. The cartoonish CD just became annoying and took more time than it was worth.

Nova: Far and away the best book. After reading reviews on various sites, everyone recommended Kaplan and Princeton Review, but no one mentioned this book. I found it by chance at the local book store. It covered everything on math and had exceptional, comprehensive explanations. Also, the drills after all chapters were very, very, very helpful. After doing all drills in Nova, the commonly considered difficult practice questions in Kaplan were almost a joke. I would recommend to anyone this book.

Official Guide: A must to have for everybody taking GMAT. I did the last third of the questions for each section, which are typically more difficult.

I recommend, in order from best to worst:

Nova, Official Guide, Petersons CDs, Barron's, Kaplan.

I recently took the test again and got a 96% in verbal, 60% in math, and a 690 overall.

Accurate and helpful

Guide was easy to use and topics and strategy were written in a way that was easy to comprehend. There were sufficient questions for the sample exams and were close to what the real exam had.
