About the Author
Dr. M. Norvel Young currently serves as chancellor emeritus and senior advancement officer of Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. Under his leadership as president, Pepperdine moved from a small college of 950 students to one of the most respected universities in America, having five schools and 6500 students.

Dr. Norvel Young lived an extraordinary life - not because of the wealth he had, not because of the occupations he held, not because of the rich and famous people he met and was good friends with, but because he was a man of God. He lived a life that truly reflected that he had placed God above everything else. God rewarded his faithfulness and his obedience, and he went on to lead others to become like Christ so that they, too, could receive God's rewards for being faithful and obedient. Even though he is no longer living on this earth, he is in Heaven with the Lord cheering us all on towards God, and his powerful and positive influence is still felt in the lives of people all across the world. In this book, Dr. Young reveals how he lived his life for God, and he invites us to live our lives for God, too. This book is truly worth reading, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an uplifting book to read.

Mr. Young has written a beautiful example of the grandeur and life that is ours in Christ. It's a living, breathing life, not boring, stuffy or stagnant as some may picture when thinking of being a Christian. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and hope to share it with many people.

About the Author
John M. Yumoto is perhaps the foremost authority on the samurai sword outside of Japan. A native of California, he began his study of Japanese swrodcraft during his early childhood in Japan. While in Japan he studied under a number of masters from different schools and learned the art of sword polishing and of identification and evaluation. He has held membership in a number of sword clubs and at present is an active member of the Japan Society for the Preservation of the Samurai Sword and the Northern California Sword Club. He has also been requested to serve as advisor to the Japanese Sword Society of the United States, presently being organized.

Somewhat dry in presentation...

This is a fairly serious overview of Samurai swords intended for someone who is interested in collecting them (or perhaps has inherited one). That is, this is quite a 'theoretical' book intended to convey, in a quite concise manner, the myriad of details needed to identify Samurai swords.
The book goes through a very brief overview of Japan's sword history including some very rough information on the swords produced in various time periods. Mixed in here is a tiny amount of non-technical information in the form of some tales of how the special clay-coating heat-treating process was invented.
The book then presents detailed information on such subjects as blade curvature, temper lines, tip profile, tang markings and finishing. This section has a number of line drawings that do help convey the information in a clear and simple manner.
This leads into a very in-depth section with the Japanese characters that could be found on a sword tang. This section is quite long and, considering the book's purpose, not really very useful to the majority of people. That is, without understanding Japanese you really aren't likely to be able to use this section - it would be much better to consult with someone who does understand Japanese.
I really had hoped for more of an overview of the history with some details on the more famous crafters. There is also very little information on the manufacturing process other than some very cursory paragraphs and drawings. I agree that this subject deserves many books but I also think that since it is not really highlighted in this volume, a beginner will have no real reason to understand WHY certain eras and smiths were regarded so highly. That is, without more background on the process one is left asking the question "what is wrong with a stainless-steel blade?".
One for the serious collector but you will definitely need other books on the subject to really get an appreciation of the remarkable nature of the Samurai sword.

I was once told "If you are interested in buying a real samurai sword buy this book read it once and then read it again and again." There is probably no other book, in english, that has as much info on antique samurai blades as this book. A must for anyone interested in sword collecting or even a serious martial artist.

If you own ONE book....

This book is exactly what you need to understand the factors that determine rarity and value. It contains a comprehensive delineation of the varieties of each sword part, maker dates and places, and a good dose of relevant history to the development and use of the sword.
This is not the ONLY book you need - but it should be the first.
This small investment can literally save you thousands in mistaken purchases...you will quickly see why you should save your money, i.e. don't buy several $400 swords from Ebay, and rather purchase the "special" (albeit expensive) blade.
There are too many hoaxers out there, and you need to visualize your purpose. Do you want a fragile 15th century relic? A modern (and very pricey) blade of Iaido practice? A WWII (and prior) collectible? What's the difference?
Why be able to read the maker's mark? What difference doe it make? Do you want the master's blade, the student's blade or the machine made? Better find out the difference before you invest.
Would you buy coins without a Redbook? Stamps without a Scotts'?

one of the strangest books ever written for children - and funny

This is one of the strangest books ever written for children.
Published in 1959.
Written by a man who was better known as a writer for adults, but now rather forgotten.
Illustrated by the great Raymond Briggs!

Imagine a blend of morality tale, Lewis Caroll, G.K. Chesterton (as in "The Man Who Was Thursday"), Roald Dahl dilemmas, choices, and consequences, Edith Nesbit when she is a bit spooky, and much extravagant word-play.
There is also a hint of the kind of moral puzzle that occurs, for example, in C.S. Lewis's "Narnia" stories, such as "The Voyage of 'The Dawn Treader'" when Lucy finds a magic book that lets her spy on a friend, and as a result hears something unpleasant; or where the voyagers encounter the island where dreams come true, which initially sounds like a marvellous place, until you remember the bad dreams that still haunt you.
(Fantasy Rule Number 17; Be careful what you wish for.)

Middling is a typical small English village, and one typical English summer August Bank Holiday a Fair comes to Middling. (That explains the odd title that alludes to, but does not overtly use the common saying about a situation being fair to middling, or, more or less OK.)
But the Fair is not so typical. (It is very different from the Fair that comes to "Miss Read"'s "Thrush Green" on May Day.)
This Fair includes, among many strange side-shows and attractions, the "Able See Men", and Mr Scratch.
And Middling has Winterbottome School for Incapacitated Orphans, a strange school with an ominious name, a charity school, founded by Sir Percy, for children who have no parents, and who also have some (minor) disability.
The teachers have unusual characteristics.
As noted, each of the children has a disability of some kind: one is an albino, another has a thyroid problem, another is colour-blind.
Each child hopes for a change, as an adult, or sooner, if possible.
The school's current patron, Lady Charity Armstrong, lets the children have a day at the Fair, and gives each child half a crown (a single coin that was roughly comparable to an American quarter, if we are counting pennies).
A crown was five shillings (before New Pence), so half a crown was half of this, two shillings and sixpence.
In 1959 this would have been a sizeable amount for a child to spend at a Fair, perhaps comparable to the money Fern and Avery are given when the go to the County Fair in E.B. White's earlier "Charlotte's Web".)
Each child finds something on offer at one of the attractions of the Fair.
Each child is confronted with a moral dilemma: will the offered "cure" or "solution" be as good as the child hopes? will the price be personally affordable? is the offer genuine?

By the end of the day, each child has chosen, and faced the consequences of the choice and the price.

(Remember the characters, ambitions, and comeuppances that occur through Dahl's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"? Each child gets what he or she deserves, as the Oompa Loompas gleefully warn and then comment on, like a blend of Furies and Greek Chorus.)

And, such is the nature of this sort of fantasy-moral-entertainment, one of the teachers returns to the school at the end of the long, arduous and remarkable day, and begins to write the first sentences of the book that has just been read.
(E.R. Eddison did this, famously, in "The Worm Ouroboros", as did James Joyce with the starting sentence and final sentence of "Finnegans Wake", and many other stories as well, such as S.E. Hinton's Young Adult novel "The Outsiders".)

Crying Out for Reissue

Someone needs to reprint this book! (New York Times Review of Books, I'm looking at you!)

The books begins as a mysterious fair comes to a small English town. In this town is a school for children with (for want of a better word) disabilities...severe color-blindness, obesity, terrible birthmarks...who are taken to the fair as a treat.

But this fair is special. As they visit the fair, the children (and the teachers) discover that they have the opportunity to be cured, to be normal. But what exactly is the price they have to pay? And to whom?

Beautifully written and with illustrations by Raymond Briggs, this is a children's classic waiting to be rediscovered.
