About the Author
Eve S. Buzawa is a professor and chairperson of the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at the University of Massachusetts–Lowell. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Rochester as well as her Master’s and Doctoral degrees from the School of Criminal Justice, Michigan State University. She has authored and edited numerous books and monographs. Recent publications include Violence Against Women in Families and Relationships: Making and Breaking Connections, a four-volume set (co-edited with Evan Stark, 2009). Professor Buzawa has also served as a principal investigator on several federally funded research projects and has directed numerous state-funded research and training projects. She is past president of the Society of Police and Criminal Psychology, past president of the Northeast Association of Criminal Justice Sciences, and past board member for the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

Carl G. Buzawa is an attorney in private practice. Currently, he is Senior Vice President―Contracts, Legal, and Compliance at Textron Systems. He received his BA from the University of Rochester, his MA from the University of Michigan, and his JD from Harvard Law School. With Eve S. Buzawa, he is the coauthor of numerous books and articles on the topic of domestic violence.

Evan Stark is a sociologist, forensic social worker and award-winning researcher with an international reputation for his innovative work on the legal, policy and health dimensions of interpersonal violence, including its effects on children. Dr. Stark’s award-winning book, Coercive Control: The Entrapment of Women in Personal Life (Oxford, 2007),�was named the outstanding social science book published in 2007 by the Association of American Publishers and influenced the United Kingdom and other countries in Europe to expand their definitions of domestic violence to include coercive control.� With a Ph.D......University, he is Professor Emeritus at Rutgers University where he held appointments in Public Affairs, Public Health and Women and Gender Studies.�Dr. Stark has held visiting appointments and Fellowships at�the�University of Essex,� the University of Bristol,� the��Escuela Superior de Econom�a y Negocios (ESEN) in El Salvador and, most recently, as the. Leverhulme Visiting Professor�at the University of Edinburgh.� Since his retirement, Dr. Stark has done extensive work on imporiving the response to abuse women in Turkey, as part of the�State Department's "U.S. Speaker and Specialist Program" as well as in Serbia, Taiwan and�throughout the United Kingdom.�

Clear and comprehensive

I had to read this book for a graduate class. It is one of the clearest and more comprehensive textbooks I have read. The authors present an amazing amount of material in a straight-forward, easy to understand manner. If you're looking for a book to cover domestic violence and the response, this is it.

A life-changing experience!

The book “Who Dies?“ offers me a life-changing experience, the most important book I have ever read. I wish I had discovered it twenty or thirty years ago. But again, better late than never. This book makes me confront with the reality that our bodies are fragile and short-lived, and forces me to face life and death head on with a sense of urgency. Like a lost child trying to find a way home, this book provides me insight to hopefully someday, find my true self to the eternal home. As the author put it, “When reading this book, listen to it with your heart. Let it be a mirror of your own great nature. Understanding is the ultimate seduction of the mind. Go to the truth beyond the mind. Love is the bridge.” I can almost hear someone whispering in my ear while reading it. Beautifully written, packed with profound ideas and subtle meanings. Some passages are quite subtle and deep that I have to read it and re-read it several times, and still not quite sure if I fully understand the true meaning of them.

Not His Best Book, Dated and Full of Jargon

Unfortunately, I do find this to be full of New Age jargon, and pretty dated. I enjoyed it when I read it in the late 1980's, when it first came out. But at that time, I had just read a lot on Buddhist meditation practice, and I had a robust Mindfulness-Meditation practice. So I understood all the jargon. But in rereading it, I can't really recommend it to someone who doesn't have that background. The only parts I liked were the many "teaching-stories" from Buddhist sources and the occasional ones allegedly from Native American sources, and even one or two from Hasidic sources. But in general, the book was so tedious that I only read part-way through it and then deleted it from my Kindle. It was original in its day, but times have moved on. Instead of this, I would recommend any good book on Mindfulness Meditation. I would recommend the practice of "mehta" or loving-kindness meditation. And, nowadays, most of the faith traditions have a lot more pastoral care/counseling than they did in the 1980's, for people facing serious or terminal illness. Also, many medical personnel have a much better grasp of patients' needs at the end of life. At least if you ask for "palliative care" or need hospice care.

This is an advanced book on the concept of death!

Easy to read, but frank it's discussion as to why often overlook the need to come to terms with death; to prepare for it. Before we get to the gate! We often block this effort with the phrases, "it's a morbid", or "I've got my religion". What we often do not know, is that we really don't know anything for certain, and this can make death terrifying, even for those who are buoyed by religion. Steven Levin's point seems to be that life gets better when we make peace with death ahead of time. By learning to embrace and accept the unknown as it is, we change our attitude. Who knows, maybe we can join other cultures in making death a natural part of life, instead of hiding and denying it for as long as possible, like we do in the West. Life takes on a clarity and joy gets deeper when we know that we must make the most of our lives. Written in small, topicalized, chapters, it makes a great reference guide as well. It has a Buddhist/Zen flavor, but is still applicable to all, and very down to earth. Five stars for sure!
