Trivium does it again

I've had pretty good experiences with Trivium books. They're always right to the point. There's no excess, no fluff. There's just what you need to know, and nothing you don't. I'm studying to be a teacher, but planning on being a para until then. I need to pass the test, and this book is helping me do just that. It covers a ton of vital information in such a small book. I don't feel like I'm wasting my time. It tells you how the test is scored, what subjects it covers, and other important information about the test. I has reviews on reading, writing, and math. It also has practice test to accompany them. I'm really glad that **I was able to receive this book at a discount in exchange for an honest review.** This book, and Trivium books in general, are super helpful when you need to study. They take all the important information and condense it into an understandable study guide that you can get by in a fraction of the time you'd take using other sources. I recommend their books for anyone who has no interest in wasting their time studying unimportant things.

This is an absolutely Great study book

This is an absolutely Great study book. This is a comprehensive review that covers all likely areas of content that are going to be on the test. Includes practice test questions with detailed answers that clearly explain how the answer was created. This study guide includes many test taking strategies that even the most experienced test taker can learn from. It applies proven study methods and other ways that have helped countless people prepare for exams of all kinds and boils it down to a few simple, easy to learn lessons. It contains p-to-date test questions that really do help prep for the test and ensure that you are relaxed and well prepared for whatever the test can throw at you. The book contains an easy to follow flow that helps take in the material. The book keeps the material at the simplest level possible to ensure maximum understanding by all audiences. I felt much more relaxed and prepared for the test knowing that I had studied all the material, plus it is also guaranteed to raise your score or you can apply to get your money back, no questions asked!

Meh. Not great. Not terrible.

Hmm... normally I am a BIG fan of Trivium Test Prep exam preparation guides. They are almost always really great - comprehensive, detailed, etc.

This one was a little lacking, however. I was a bit disappointed. I worked in Special Education for many years, and I worked with many Paraprofessionals. I've listened to every horror story possible about taking the Paraprofessional exam from dozens of different people. So when I saw that there was actually a study guide for this exam -- which, by the way, I had no idea there was a study guide out there to help prepare for this exam -- I was thrilled. So I snagged this one up because I still have several contacts in the education world and several former students who are now wanting to go into the field of education and who could benefit from a guide like this.

However, this guide really wasn't all that I had hoped it would be.

First of all, it is very small, barely a hundred pages. It only contains three real sections, which are the Praxis II ParaPro Reading section, the Praxis II ParaPro Writing section, and the Praxis II ParaPro Math section. Each section contains a little information about each section, and then includes 30 questions for each section. The first 30 questions test your knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and usage. The next section includes 30 questions that test reading comprehension through questions over multiple passages. Finally, the last 30 questions test your knowledge of various math concepts, such as pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, etc.

The questions are very basic, and while there ARE answers for the reading and writing sections, there were none for the math section, which kind of makes the practice questions useless when you can't tell if your answers are correct or not.

I gave it three stars because the information it DOES contain is pretty useful, but there just isn't enough of it, and my three star rating is pretty generous, honestly. I have not lost my faith in Trivium test prep books because I've used far more of them that were good than bad, but this one fell short, I'm afraid.

With The Way to Cook, Julia Child creates a second culinary classic. Her first, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, introduced a generation of those used to preparing simple fare to what was then considered gourmet food, demystified classic techniques, and raised our culinary consciousness. In The Way to Cook, she also demystifies cooking techniques and does some consciousness-raising. This time, though, she speaks to everyone with little or no experience in the kitchen, which is most people these days. Always in tune with the moment, and ever the gracious realist, Child (although calling her Julia seems reasonable since she treats us with such open informality) explains in The Way to Cook how to boil an egg and stuff it, as well as how to make a perfect omelet and an elegant soufflé.

To help out readers who lack the most basic knowledge, she organizes the book by techniques rather than by ingredients. Soups are first, a relatively unintimidating choice to build confidence through delicious results such as true French Onion Soup and a contemporary Black Bean Gazpacho. Next come breads, updated to use a food processor to cut the kneading time. The fish chapter covers broiling a salmon steak and creating a sophisticated Crown Mousse of Trout. Chapters on poultry, meats, vegetables, and desserts are equally ample and wide-ranging.

When The Way to Cook was published in 1989, it accompanied a television series. A related set of videotapes, the first to teach cooking comprehensively, was offered simultaneously. However, more than 600 color photos in this book make it fully complete on its own.

Child's new magnum opus reminds us that she has almost single-handedly inspired the superb quality of modern larders. Without her unflagging commitment to good eating, it is doubtful that fresh duck foie gras would have been available for the saute included here. However, this wonderful book is hardly a paean to elitist fare, maintaining Child's unique perspective while reflecting attitudes about food that "have changed through these last years" and sharing much new knowledge. Recipes, divided into a master formula and variations, are grouped by technique; French classics stand fin-to-wing with American offerings (roast turkey). Dietary concerns are addressed with low-fat soups and a cottage cheese-enriched chicken liver mousse. Nevertheless, the author of Mastering the Art of French Cooking, who would "rather swoon over . . . one small serving of chocolate mousse . . . than indulge one . . . fat-free gelatin puddings," has not gone light. Excellent Julia Child Book!

This is a very large book and it's not the French Chef - but there is a lot here with colorful photos and details on cooking. I've learned a lot and throughly enjoy the book. I use it more as a Q&A and a how to book. Helps me A LOT !!

Simply Wonderful

If you love Julia, you'll love having this book. I am so pleased to have found this copy. The seller included a lovely note which I shall keep with the book. This copy arrived in pristine condition, even though it had been treasured by someone before me. I shall continue the tradition of using and loving this copy of Julia's book. I am very glad I found it and was able to purchase it.

Got me in the kitchen and unafraid of trying.

Many of the other reviews here do a really nice job of getting into the details of why this is THE classic cookbook.

I have no real experience in the kitchen and have no real technique as a cook. The great thing about Julia is the way she turns a recipe into a step-by-step process that anyone can follow. You just have to have a little patience. Once you understand a few basic master recipes, like the one for white sauces, or beef bourguignonne, preparing the variations is a no brainer. Before I got this book, I had no idea how to prepare vegetables other than to boil or microwave. Her instructions and processes for preparing vegetables are easy to learn and repeat. After a few times, its like riding a bicycle. Having grown up in the south, foods were fried, and vegetables were cooked in some sort of casserole with cheese or pork fat. The idea of cooking with wine never even crossed my mind. I am still learning, and this book covers so many kinds of dishes I never run out of things to try.

She takes the time to explain what to do when things go wrong, and how to correct common mistakes. The only thing better than having this cookbook is watching the DVDs of her TV shows. If you are willing to spend time in the kitchen, this is a great resource. I didn't know cooking could be so enjoyable.

About the Author

Glyn Davis is Chancellor’s Fellow and Reader in the School of Design at the University of Edinburgh, UK. He is the co-editor, with Gary Needham, of Warhol in Ten Takes (2013), and the author of monographs on Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (2009) and Far from Heaven (2011).

Kay Dickinson is an Associate Professor of Film Studies at Concordia University, Canada. She is the editor of Movie Music: A Film Reader (2002) and the author of Off Key: When Film and Music Won't Work Together (2008).

Lisa Patti is an Assistant Professor in the Media and Society Program at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Amy Villarejo is Professor in the Department of Performing and Media Arts at Cornell University. Her books include Ethereal Queer (2014), Film Studies: The Basics, second edition (2013), and Lesbian Rule: Cultural Criticism and the Value of Desire (2003).
