What I appreciate most about this textbook is the readability and practicality of the psychological terms and information presented. Many theories are rooted in real world examples that help the reader understand the application of these theories in everyday experiences. I find myself consistently drawing on information learned from this textbook in both academic and non-academic settings. This realization is consistent with the underlying focus on the importance of systems thinking highlighted throughout this text when understanding the psychology of sustainable behavior and living. Overall, this is a particularly useful textbook for someone new to psychology and interested in sustainability.

This book by Parlett (A Dictionary of Card Games, Oxford Univ., 1992) is a superb work that succeeds in defining board games from their ancient inception to the present day. The most basic games were of a race nature (from point A to point B). Board games then evolved by implementing dice, cards, extra pieces, and territories. This exhaustive work is more an informative reference than an easy read, with subjects divided into Race Games, Space Games, Chase Games, Displace Games, and War Games (such as chess). The book gets high marks for historical depth, and includes game varieties from every country. Readers will find one shortcoming, however: a lack of "how-to" strategies for winning play. Instead, there is detailed research on the mechanisms of games. This is a worthy updating of H.J.R. Murray's classic A History of Board Games Other Than Chess (1952). Great tidbits or obscure, entertaining facts can be found on any given page. The game mechanisms can also be applied with little ingenuity. Highly recommended.AMarty Soven, Woodside, NY

A former editor of Games & Puzzles magazine, he has written many books on card and word games, and has himself invented many games, including Hare & Tortoise, which has been published in ten languages and won many awards, including Germany's prestigious Game of the Year award for 1979.

Chase, displace, space, race games-- and themes!

I learned last week that my personality type seeks out pursuits not for competition or reward, but for the pleasure of the pastime. I get absorbed, as many readers of Parlett may, by the world within a game that mirrors and distorts our reality. Curious about the history of chess, and the personality quirks associated with it and other strategies occupying space on a grid, board, circuit, or pattern, I found Parlett's guide.

As with so much of gaming scholarship, throughout his entries, Parlett nods to the massive but uneven, now partially superseded, research of H.J.R. Murray on the origins of chess and varieties of other board games. I might add how it's easier to consult and use than Murray's exhaustive compendia. Now out-of-print, a companion to Parlett's card games history, this 1999 study deserves reprinting in paperback by OUP.

"The aim of this book is primarily to present a historical survey of positional board games, but extending the story to modern and proprietary games whenever they can be shown to advance or expand on a traditional idea," Parlett explains (p. 7). He suggests that "the power of involvement of its underlying abstract structure" determines, no matter the label, its abstract content or representational surface, the success long-term for a theme game. "What makes people want to go on playing a game once its theme is past its sell-by date is the fact that it remains engaging and exciting despite its outdated appearance and loss of topicality." For example, we do not go into battle with elephants, take counsel with bishops, or ride as knights into the pawns that comprise the enemy's ranks-- yet we still play chess with these pieces.

As Parlett cautions in his lively introduction, this erudite yet accessible survey's not meant to be read front-to-back, although I did so, at least to get the gist of it all. Its nineteen chapters range widely as they investigate varieties of race, chase, displace, and space games. Theme games conclude this compact yet dense enough volume. While not submerged by descriptions, those unfamiliar with specific games may find this better suited for reference about one's chosen pastimes; I found for my own interests those on "tafl" or Northern European strategy games and the section on chess most engaging. After a while, relying on print rather than observation, your mind bogs down in details, inevitably, of games that elude your easy comprehension when locked into words and a few illustrations, however instructive.

The reason it's a reference rather than a chronological narrative? It's likely you'll skip to the type of games here most appealing to your own sensibility. He breaks them down into roughly theme games and four related forms of chase, displace, space, and race! As an inventor ("Hares & Tortoises") as well as historian (he also publishes on card and word games), Parlett brings an enthusiasm for the process of how games evolve and how new ones appear I found contagious. Not that I'll ever figure out the game of "Go" any more than chess at my advanced age, but it's instructive to ponder how we tend to gravitate towards passing the time with imaginary hunts, wars, chases, captures, and climbs, no matter the culture or terrain we live in.

I've heard that such criss-crosses, dots, squares, and lines as cave dwellers made show these deeply grooved patterns in our minds. Parlett's brisk survey, often acerbic and well-written, takes you into the mystery of how such games mutate and shift as new ones appear while only those that speak to a lasting need for meaning and shape beneath the holiday season's latest movie tie-in or promotional throwaway fade.

It might have been entertaining to include games that have been conceived of on boards but that exist in speculative fiction. What about "Das Glasperlenspiel", the "Glass Bead Game" of Hermann Hesse's Castalia, for example, or fantasy games played only in novels? However, as there's plenty of more easily obtained real games in these pages to ponder, the scope of this book may have precluded such forays into the imaginative realm of pursuits. There's enough deserving ones to locate out there on the shelves. Or, to make up, as Parlett shows.

Mancala, chess, checkers (or draughts), go, backgammon: in many forms across many lands, what drives people towards these time-tested winners? They transcend trends, and outlast fashions. They coax from us, as Parlett documents neatly without too much withering detail, long-lasting satisfaction as we mimic our ancestors dashing about the savannah-- or substitute more safely for the hazards of the battlefield.

"The Oxford History of Board Games", the latest book from British writer and games expert David Parlett, is a magnificent overview of the development of games over the millenia. Such a book is long overdue - the previous similar work was H.J.R. Murray's "A History of Board-Games", published back in 1952. Parlett however has the distinct advantage of another half a century of research, and this shows: His book even includes and discusses (not to say dissects) the Roman board game recently excavated by archeologists in Colchester, and rounds off with a chapter on modern board game design: Risk, Monopoly, Diplomacy, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit and a host of others are to be found right there. Parlett is thus able to correct a number of the mistakes made by Murray, and adds considerably to the store of knowledge in the field of games. Parlett also in his book divides the games by a very logical classification, and tells about the historical development of each in turn. This book is in short a long-overdue milestone, and an absolute must for anyone with the slightest interest in games. Despite the thoroughness with which Parlett treats the subject, the writing is lucid, sprinkled with interesting cultural references and topped with occasional flashes of dry British humour. I cannot recommend it highly enough - and as a collector of books on games, with 1100 titles on my shelves, I should know. - Dan Glimne

A great book for new A2s.

I recommend this book to all new A2s. It assumes you know "audio", so deep technical writing is bypassed for a broad and comprehensive depiction of the responsibilities and tools with which an A2 must be acquainted. Read it cover to cover; when you're on the job it'll be as if you've been there and done that. Throughout the book you'll be introduced to folks already working in the television audio world; May you find yourself working with them someday!

Although I haven't completely read the book, I have found it to be well written in understandable terms. It will make a good reference for any audio engineer to have in his professional library.

This book is punchy, to the point, at times delightfully personal, and full of page-turning mini-cases from well-known and successful innovators. This book is well worth the inspiration and ideas it imparts. I plan to use it in the innovation and entrepreneurship courses I teach.

WELL DONE! This is what people should be talking about in the startup world.

I loved this book. It got better and better. I was excited to see what insights I could draw next. The stories drew me in and I felt like I was really learning form the experiences of famous founders at companies like GoPro, DropBox, Spanx, Uber, and surprisingly Ford even. I was totally engrossed. It was an experience.

So grateful this book used so many cool examples and didn't just dive into meaningless discussion about stupid meta ideas like Innovation Accounting (I hate The Lean Start Up, such a dumb book).

Founders used to seem like untouchable magical visionaries who saw the future. But it makes more sense that they searched for something they wanted, like a camera to take surfing. Then finally decided to make one for themselves after they couldn't find it anywhere. From the get-go these founders were experts on their products. They knew from personal experience what these products needed to be.

And it is so much simpler. You don't have to go out and interview people to find their "pain points" (barf). Steve Jobs said it himself. People don't know what they want when you ask them.

You make a product you really want because you can't find it anywhere. You make it good because why would you want to use something crappy. And then at the least you made your life better. And chances are so high that other people will see what you made and want it too!

The rock climbing company guy making himself better equipment! Sooooo cool. Steve Wozniak wanting a personal computer his whole life. Ferry Porsche wanting a light weight car that handled well. This book is all I want to talk about!

oh! and P.S. I loved the personal stories. You have some guts meeting dudes in parking lots to make planners and you were so real when describing your struggles as an entrepreneur. You've got moxie. I hope your ideas make it somewhere. We have too many kids coming out of business school starry eyed trying to be the next big thing without any substance.

Maybe they all need to just get jobs until they really find a big idea.

Every aspiring entrepreneur should read this

It seems like just about everyone wants to be an entrepreneur, which is wonderful, but most startups fail. Schwarting reveals a startlingly simple idea that explains why most startups fail but some grow like crazy. This simple idea is called the User Method.

Schwarting relates many stories of failed startups and the problem is, basically, always the same: startups fail because they don't offer a (useful) solution to an intense need; not enough people really care about using the startup's product. As the CEO of a software startup and alumni of one of the world's top accelerators, I've experienced this startup failure firsthand. If I had known about the User Method two years ago, it may have saved me a lot of heartache because it sheds light on how some of the biggest companies you've ever heard of (Apple, YouTube, Air BNB, Uber, GoPro, etc.) all started the same way: the founders built solutions to THEIR OWN problems for THEMSELVES.

Schwarting's research and insights are invaluable to aspiring entrepreneurs, innovators, and creators. To borrow the clich�, the User Method truly is a "must read."

Excellent Book!

I never like to lose more than 10 pips on one trade, it's like a red line for me that separates staying cool in a trade and doubt taking over: this book fits my risk profile to the pip-> therefore, a scalper I am.

After making it halfway through the book and putting the setups to the test, it has become clear to me that Bob (hope you don't mind me calling you Bob) went the extra mile to uncover the fundamental details that are required to successfully trade his setups. In my experience, 98% of the other books out there (especially Forex books) leave those little but essential details up to you to figure out over time. The problem with that is, if you are lazy and want something for nothing like many of us do, you are probably gonna drop those other books fairly quickly, jump back on your horse, and continue your search for the Holy Grail (instead of doing the hard work that is required to be successful with them).

Good news, in this book, Bob has already done all of the hard work for you. This book is like food-stamps for the starving trader. I highly recommend this book.

Most Excellent

For some time I have wanted to jump into learning price action trading. The trouble is, there is not a lot of material out there. Of course, there are Al Brooks' excellent books. But, if you are like me, digesting and understanding Brooks is like unraveling riddles of the sphinx - most difficult and fraught with expensive mistakes. Enter Bob Volman's book. Volman's lucid treatment of what could be a dry subject is refreshing. Volman's writing is clear, sometimes funny, and terribly engaging.

Volman presents each chapter with a general introduction to an idea. He then proceeds to give many examples with much, much commentary. At first, I was a little dissapointed with the book. Flip through it, and there are relatively few charts. But, it is only an illusion. There are few charts per page because Volman explains so much for each chart. And again, the reading isn't dry. Volman has a witty flair for English and a dry sense of humor that makes the multi-paragraph (and page) commentary for each chart seem like a short figure caption.

This is the real stuff, too. No smoke and mirrors, laggy indicators and outlandish performance metrics. Read Volman's book, and turn a simple candlestick chart into an amazing drama of tug-o-war.

First impressions

Well I've never heard of Bob Volman or of Light Tower Publishing but after reading this book I can tell you that it's on par with what I've read from Al Brooks. The author has a very readable and insightful style which makes for strangely quick reading for this subject.

In some ways it strikes me as a sort of a price action short hand when you compare it to Al Brooks writings but nevertheless I think it very insightful and I plan on using some of the methods in trading equities.

I don't remember anything in the book that struck me as off or not matching my experience in the market. Every chapter rings true and fits the true reality of day trading like only a very small percentage of trading books do. I found myself nodding my head quite a few times in agreement with Bob's lucid explanations of many of the details of trading as a whole. My favorite quote is... "simple because the edge is not a thing that can surface by itself. It can only be obtained by the blood, sweat and tears of committing oneself to countless hours of studying markets, patterns, set ups and price action principles."

Mere introduction, just two maps, and too many inconsistencies

This volume spends half of its already slim 300 pages just leading up to the conflict. Given inconsistencies in the remainder of the material however I question the veracity of the seemingly excellent introductory material. For instance, in discussing the Baltic naval campaign, first the author mentions that the French were only able to contribute one ship to begin with as they were otherwise entirely tied up in the Mediterranean. Mere pages later however there is mention of an entire French fleet. Furthermore, in discussing the intended landing on the Crimean peninsula, first the author mentions the mouth of Katcha river, but later says the landing is set for Eupatoria much further up Kalamita Bay, and indeed the site of the actual landing. At least there is a map showing the detail of the Crimean coast; the only other map is of the entire Black Sea, though the author continually points out the other theaters of the war, such as the Baltic naval engagements alluded to above, for which a map would have been very useful.

Very good for someone looking for a start

This book is excellent for someone looking to learn the basics of the Crimean war.It is beautiful in its ability to bring to life the economic, political and military circumstances which lead to this war, its also critical of their failures and successes.

Very good book, I highly recommend it to anyone who is a military history buff but knows little about the Crimean war & wish to find a book to "jump start" their further reading into this unique and fascinating conflict of Victorian Era warfare.

Oh those Russians!

Yes, this book dedicate half of its pages to explain the causes of this war, which was more an arm wrestle between imperial forces, though on a very strategic location for British purposes of the time. And so, this not very known war it is characterized by the great lost of lives that were the usual of every battle, battles that were fought by pure courage and heroism, using a great deal of artillery -that obliged the soldiers to even dodge cannonballs- and charging the enemy position with cavalry and of course, hand to hand with bayonet. The aftermath of every battle was a sad, shocking experience, certainly it was too much bloodshed that could have been spared, easy to say now, but seems that it was a time when some mediocre empires sought for some objetives by any means ... Oh, those Russians! A good reading considering I was searching for a book with not much detail.
