So good!

Listen, everyone. Stop whatever it is you're doing and read this book. Since I started Lily and the Octopus, a few strange things have happened: 1) My dog has started talking to me, 2) I have laughed like a maniac in public while tapping at my Kindle to turn pages faster, and 3) I have become FAR more emotional in public than I am comfortable with.

You do not need to be a dog lover to appreciate this book. You just have to be, you know, not an insensitive a-hole. And even if you are, this might be your weakness (just don't read it in public).

I highly recommend this to everyone. It will knock your socks off.

‘It’s Thursday the first time I see it.’

Ted Flask lives with his dachshund Lily. Ted is lonely, but Lily is an adorable companion. Sure, she’s aging, she’s twelve, but the two of them have great times together. Until, one Thursday night, while Lily and Ted are talking about boys they think are cute, Ted notices an octopus over Lily’s eye.

This beautiful story is about Ted and Lily’s six month battle with the octopus. It’s also about life and love, about the bond that some of us form with our pets, about dealing with saying goodbye. It’s funny, heart wrenching and sad. Lily talks to Ted, and so does the octopus. Ted would do anything he could to defeat the octopus. Anything.

‘Lily you were, quite simply, the greatest to me.’

Reading this story, my thoughts were never very far away from my own special dog, the late great Sir Bruce the Battle Rat. If you are a pet lover, I think you’ll relate to this story. You may need tissues, I certainly did.

My favorite book of 2016!

I absolutely loved Lily and The Octopus. I found it almost impossible to put down and when I was forced to do so, I couldn't stop thinking about it. Steven Rowley has created a beautifully touching and poignant story. Our narrator, Ted Flask, is a man struggling with the loneliness and heartbreak of everyday existence. It made me think a lot about the things, big and small, significant and trivial, that happen to us all and how they ultimately make you who you are. A useless therapist. An ex-boyfriend. A challenging relationship with a distant mother. These are just some of Ted's stories.

Ted's best friend and companion is Lily, a 12 year old Dachshund. They share an amazing bond and I was so captivated by their relationship. In this sometimes fantastical tale, she speaks to Ted and I loved getting to hear her voice. We learn that there is something very wrong with Lily and Ted is forced to confront the possibility of life without his treasured dog.

This book is so beautifully written. It is funny and thoughtful and heartbreaking. I cried real tears. I found myself rereading entire chapters after I was done, just so I could go back and relive this wonderful story. I highly recommend this book. It's a definite must read!

Bound in the kind of thick, stain-proof pages usually employed for preschool boardbooks, this cookbook dumbs down basic recipes to inventive new lows. The Men’s Health magazine team responsible for the similarly silly A Man, A Can, A Plan again explain how to microwave canned food into something approximating dinner. Rather than saute or simmer, readers are instructed to "dump" and "nuke" ingredients, as in a recipe for Sweet and Sour Meatballs, which requires a can of crushed pineapples, a can of sloppy joe sauce and a pound of frozen precooked meatballs. Other recipes not for the faint of heart include Slab O’ Ham with Redeye Gravy (essentially microwaved slices of canned ham in a coffee/pork sauce gravy) and Hot Slam Dunk, a dip that calls for mayonnaise, sour cream, canned artichoke hearts, spinach and a few other ingredients to be microwaved together for several minutes. (The authors award "Extra credit" to those who pour the mixture into a hollowed-out loaf of pumpernickel.) Nevertheless, despite its frightening culinary intentions, there’s a nice sense of fun in this cookbook, and a few decent ideas to boot. Why not microwave chocolate syrup, whole milk and vanilla extract together for Liquid Bliss? It’s a reliable, no-brainer way to make hot chocolate. And there’s nothing nauseating about the canned yam-based Sam-I-Am Casserole—butter and brown sugar mask a variety of sins. While this might make a great (gag?) gift for the newly independent frat guy or confirmed bachelor, it’s hard to imagine any but the hardiest kitchen-phobes making frequent use of this book, especially when it’s so easy to just order in.

All This From A Microwave? REALLY?

I'm a single guy. I love to eat. I hate to cook. These recipes are (for the most part) easy, tasty and only require a few ingredients. For the most part all of the ingredients are readily available. Not sure what "Caponata" (canned "eggplant appetizer") is or where I'd get it, but the rest of the ingredients should be in any reasonably well stocked grocery store. For lazy, hungry, single folks this one is a keeper!

Microwaves make it even simpler

If you are really in a hurry and a man a can a plan is just too time consuming for the moment then do like the series did and take to the microwave. Get things done even faster and in a pinch. Great last minute minimalist meal saver.

Great series of books

Great format. The books can be wiped off if food gets on them. This is the second title In this series that I have purchased for my grandson. He loves them. They are easy to follow, uncomplicated and require very little time.

An incredibly useful book that allows the correct philosophy of how we learn as children, follow teachers and their creativity through MS and HS. An incredible resource for the pre-service band teacher - a great resource for band directors who need some direction in relating everyday concepts in different ways.

This is easily one of the most wonderfully boring textbooks I have ever had to read in my college career. It made an incredibly boring professor that much more boring! If that's what the author was going for, he achieved it without a doubt. I only give this book three stars, because I got an A in the class. I'm not saying this book helped with that in any way, though.
