Good overview

The management of risk in the context of energy or weather is quite different than in other contexts, due to the peculiarities of the data that occurs in energy prices. The high volatility of energy prices can range, as the authors of this book point out, between 50-100% for gas, to 100-500% for electricity. No doubt this kind of volatility, and other properties such as correlations and mean reversion, entails that some different mathematical strategies for modeling energy derivatives be devised. The authors give a good tour of some of these strategies, and anyone interested in energy derivatives will gain a lot of insight into their modeling when reading this book. Due to space constraints, only chapters 5 and 7, which this reviewer considered the most important of the book, will be reviewed here.
In chapter 5 the author presents techniques for energy modeling that go beyond the used of the convenience yield by using forward pricing techniques. The goal is to describe the dynamics of future contract prices that takes into account the correlations with other futures, and not on the price evolution of a single contract. Thus it is the `forward curve' that is relevant for obtaining a useable model for derivative cash flow. The HJM model is presented as one of these, with changes in the forward curve over a particular time interval represented as a linear combination of random perturbations. For energy markets, each perturbation is specified by a deterministic shape function multiplied by a Gaussian factor. The unobservability of the factors determining the forward curve evolution makes the use of historical data mandatory if the parameters are to be estimated. But lack of sufficient historical data and its nonstationarity complicate this estimation. The authors discuss the Schwartz-Smith multi-factor model as an example of a forward curve dynamics model and give some solutions. They then move on to a model that specifies the dynamics for only the contracts that are actually traded, which in the literature are called `market models.' The model they actually discuss is a multivariate geometric Brownian motion representation of the forward curve dynamics, where the volatility and drift functions are linear functions of the forward prices. The authors then derive the `discrete string models', where it is assumed that the number of factors is equal to the number of contracts, and the random factors are governed by ordinary Brownian motion. String models are represented as having the advantage of being able to directly observe the factors in the historical data. The authors apply string models to multi-commodity cases, and discuss an example for monthly forward prices. They show how to match the current forward curve, the option prices, and the correlation structure for this model.
The discussion in chapter 7 revolves around finding better models for the dynamics of power prices that capture the special properties of energy prices, such as mean reversion and seasonality, and the need for stable models. They therefore introduce `hybrid models', which they claim give a more natural representation of the dynamics of power prices, make use of nonprice forward-looking information, and can take the historical data on power prices and then extend it to information on fuel prices, outages, etc. The construction of these models is based on the use of nonlinear transformations on a collection of random variables. The random variables are essentially the system demand, natural gas and oil price, outages, emission prices, and weather at a particular time. The power price then can be written as a function of the dynamics of these factors, the latter written by the authors in terms of the corresponding tradables. Recognizing that hedging cannot be done on some of these factors, they adjust the power price formula so that the power tradables, i.e. the forwards and option prices, are exactly matched. This matching transformation is chosen so that if the forward contracts and options are priced using the adjusted formula, one recovers the exact current prices. The model, as the authors summarize it, is an attempt to explain the behavior of the tradables in terms of the evolution of the underlying factors and static adjustments to the terminal probability distribution. Historical information on the tradables and spot products is not used to calibrate the model, but it is used to validate the model. The authors distinguish between `reduced-form' hybrid models, where the transformation is calibrated from the historical prices, and `fundamental' hybrid models, where the transformation is calibrated from the market structure and is only tested on the historical prices. The authors discuss an example of a reduced-form hybrid model that is heavily parametrized, but has the advantage of using price data more efficiently. The rest of the chapter concentrates on fundamental hybrid models, with the author first discussing how power prices are formed in competitive markets. They consider a typical pool market, with the price determined via auction mechanisms. The authors then try to identify and characterize the underlying random variables that actually affect power prices. The time series for the price of power is written in terms of the demand using a `bid stack' function. The bid stack function is approximated by a `generation stack' that is found for a given time by sorting generation units by their generation costs. This approximation is checked by comparing the marginal generation costs generated by the generation stack with the distribution of power prices determined by the time series via the bid stack. There should be agreement in both approaches between the higher order moments. This comparison forms the basis of the authors' hybrid approach to modeling power prices. A transformation is found which relates the marginal generation costs to the distribution of power prices with the requirement that the prices of market instruments used for calibration are matched, and the higher moments are (approximately) preserved. The transformation is not unique, and in fact a family of transformations induced by the multiplication and stack scaling operators can be found.

Despite certain shortcomings, this fictionalized account of the tragedy of Tiananmen Square is as engrossing as it is appalling. When Alex's father, a news cameraman, is assigned to Beijing, Alex leaps at the chance to join him. At loose ends in the alien metropolis, the teenager studies Chinese and explores the city on his bike, filming with a makeshift hidden camera. Not surprisingly, these skills come in handy during both the student protests and the subsequent crackdown. In fact, Alex's avocation, along with his father's profession, seem to have been chosen solely to provide the reader with a bird's-eye view of the events of that brutal spring. Even Alex's obsession with military history seems tacked on in order to facilitate the lumbering symbolism of the novel's conclusion. By contrast, Bell's descriptions of the action in and around the Square are vivid and heartbreaking--there are moments when the searing force of this fragment of recent history shines through the thin characters and eclipses the contrived plot. Ages 12-up.

Grade 6-12-- Alex, 17-year-old war aficionado and son of a Canadian cameraman, accompanies his father to China and becomes enmeshed in the Tiananmen incident of 1989. He gets separated from his father, is befriended by some students, witnesses a good deal of the massacre, and is finally smuggled out by a student who pays for his liberation with her life. This is a blood-and-thunder story, and Bell tells it with gusto. Incidents are piled on one another, background descriptions are very convincing, and at times readers will almost feel they are there. All this amounts to an incredibly compelling novel. Curiously, when the protagonist is not in China, he becomes somewhat one-dimensional. The beginning is a tad contrived to lead to the real meat of the novel, and the ending is pat beyond common decency (in a grand, melodramatic scene, Alex destroys all his war toys back in comfy surburban Toronto). Yet the preponderant part of this novel is marvelously realized, partially from the immediacy of using first-person narration, partially from telling vignettes that really bring the time, place, and situation to life in a most memorable way. There is also a certain ring of truth about some elements of the story that resonates long after putting this novel down. In spite of the flaws, this is an excellent tale, well told, and a historical novel of note. --John Philbrook, San Francisco Public Library

Not so Forbidding

This is an admirable little book, dealing with an iconic building in China, if not a series of buildings, the Forbidden City. The product of the Ming and Qing rulerz and a symbol of China and its recent history (no one building could probably symbolize all of it, given the age of the culture and its continuity).

I approached this book with expectations of learning two things, first about Chinese building cocepts and techniques. In this first thing, the book does not provide much to enhance understanding of this particular point. There is a glossary of terms, but really if you are seeking to understand Chinese imperial architecture, this is not the book for you.

Despite these shortcomings, the book does succeed very well in discussing the meaning that these series of buildings has had and will likely have as long as there is a China and how this has changed as living memories of the revolution have faded. As is always the case, as China has become less ideological and more reasonable, there is a greater appreciation of the past and more respect for what the Forbidden City means to the population in general. During the Cultural Revolution, Zhou Enlai felt the only thing that could be done with the building was to close it because tempers ran so high.

There are also marvelous stories about the building and its content. I suppose that because I grew up near New Orleans, I have always liked stories about faded glory and decadence of the always reliable upper classes. In the aftermath of the fall of the Q'ing dynasty, both the eunuchs and Pu Yi, the last emperor were apparently competing in some sort of contest of larceny before the entire collection of the Forbidden City could be catalogued and placed in glass cases for the edification of the general public. The eunuchs managed to get out enough to set themselves up in a series of antique stores in the vicinity of the Forbidden City. The former emperor (he was six when he abdicated) managed to get enough out to furnish his shabby court when he was ruler of the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo (here, as always, the Japanese helped out). Both sides eyed each as they hid various priceless treasures, the eunuchs burning down an entire building in order to cover up their crimes.

.Both the stories and the quest for meaning provide the central strengths of the book.. So if you are looking for something to provide you with insight or are just curious about imperial Chinese history, check out this book. It is worth the effort.

A little secretive pleasure

If you want a big, glossy picture book of the Forbidden City don't buy this book. If you want something lovely that you'll keep forever, buy it indeed! This is the "Little Black Book" on the subject of the palace itself and so much more. It's a small, neat, lovely to handle edition whose only colour is in the red endpapers that are exactly the red of the Forbidden City's palace walls. The old, grainy, black and white photographs add to the pleasure and increase the feeling that you are getting something true and genuine instead of just another travel guide. Geremie Barme's text is erudite, as you'd expect from a Professor of Asian History, but it's also deliciously gossipy and has a pace and feeling for detail that is never boring. Professor Barme is especially good on the modern uses the Forbidden City has been put to, and his views on the Communist era are refreshingly balanced, putting Chairman Mao into the "Imperial" context very nicely. I especially loved it because it had a picture of an event I actually attended: the 1976 funeral of Chou En Lai. The shock of seeing it, just as it was, came as a delightful surprise. A lovely book. It feels Chinese.

Mark Fackler is Professor of Communications emeritus at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Kathy Brittain Richardson is the president of Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. She is the former provost and a professor of communication at Berry College, Rome, Georgia.

About the Author
Robert Anemone is a biological anthropologist (Ph.D. 1988, University of Washington) with research interests in primate paleontology, growth and development and life history of hominoids, and functional anatomy of living and fossil prosimian primates. He has an active vertebrate paleontology research program in the Paleocene and Eocene of the Great Divide Basin in southwestern Wyoming, where he has been leading field crews since 1994. Before coming to Western Michigan University in 1998, he taught at Tulane University and at the State University of New York at Geneseo.

Firstly, we have not come across any other text which provides an intro� duction to the finite element method (FEM) solely from a heat transfer perspective. Most introductory texts attempt to teach FEM from a struc� tural engineering background, which may distract non-structural engineers from pursuing this important subject with full enthusiasm. We feel that our approach provides a better alternative for non-structural engineers. Secondly, for people who are interested in using FEM for heat transfer, we have attempted to cover a wide range of topics, presenting the essential the� ory and full implementational details including two FORTRAN programs. In addition to the basic FEM heat transfer concepts and implementation, we have also presented some modem techniques which are being used to enhance the accuracy and speed of the conventional method. In writing the text we have endeavoured to keep it accessible to persons with qualifications of no more than an engineering graduate. As mentioned earlier this book may be used to learn FEM by beginners, this may include undergraduate students and practicing engineers. However, there is enough advanced material to interest more experienced practitioners.

This book is badly written

I really has a bad experience with books written by the author H-C Huang. The other one, Plate & Shell, is also the same thing. I suspect what he did are just taking the source code from their research group, modify it and to make money out of it. All the codes in those books are "goto" code --- code filled with goto statement. I sincerely advice those who which to buy this book give it a second thought. The technique outlined in this book is out of date, and is really fundamental stuff. It lacks insight, motivation and does not show any realistic application of the FEM for heat transfer problem.

Despite the fact that the book is rather old (1997) it covers efficiently a considerable number of issues on GIS and Computer Cartography. I found it very useful and I recommend it to all those who want to get into the field.

wish it had been longer

First I wish it had been longer. That we'd have gotten a glimpse of his life. There was no reason to bring the military or Seals into it. A common denominator amongst authors who don't write the military genre as a speciality is to make everyone a Seal or Special Ops. Perhaps because without having to delve into a backstory they just say the title and the reader does all the work. If you're not going to make the investment yourself in the genre then don't use it. Leave it to the ones that do it well (Liliana Hart, Kalypso Masters, Sandrine Gasq-Dion) and use another way to explain absence. He should have just been gone - away working or on a cattle drive or kidnapped by aliens. Any of those would have been more believable.

That said the story was a pretty decent one. Kaley wasn't snarky. God I hate a snarky female lead. I love an alpha male who actually stays an alpha male instead of turning into a neutered whelp.

If you like author you'll like the book.

Another gret hit!

Absolutely loved it! I liked Quinn from the start. He sounded like a stand up guy that you just fell in love with. And then there's Kaley, quit and reserved. Totally opposite of Quinn. With the help of Quinn's sister and a little snooping on his part he finally finds away to approach Kaley and make her his. Again I loved it and the characters worked well together bringing out different quality's in each other! A must read!

Great author one of my favorites

Another great story from a wonderful author. Love this whole series. If I am right there are 12 in all by different author and different tales. I bought six of them and haven't been disappointed at all. Jenika Snow, Marie Harte, Hazel Gower are some of the others. Be sure to check them out I did and loved them all.
