Whoa Wagamama!

Wagamama is a Japanese-like restaurant I frequented while living in London. After going through withdrawals when I returned to California, I came across this cookbook. It is so good that you would not believe my review if I really, honestly wrote of how much I enjoy their food. The noodle dishes are best! For those of you who have not tried the food at Wagamama, think of simple and fresh ingredients tossed together in non-traditional ways. The recipes in this book are pretty easy and my limited skills in the kitchen are enough to make great meals.

While Wagamama restaraunts are mostly known to those who have been to London, this cookbook is made for an American audience. They include cup and spoon measures, say shrimp instead of prawns, cillantro not corriander, snow peas not mange tout. However, the DVD that comes with it is of minimal use if you have any experience with stir-fry and they use British words. A great book for anyone wanting some slightly westernized Asian dishes, as well as those anglophiles longing for London. (Note: Not all the menu dishes are included. My favorite, chicken katsu curry is not in the book).

This `Wagamama Cookbook' is a very attractive and well thought out selection of recipes from this well known restaurant chain.

This has information about setting up your Asian inspired kitchen and what things you may need and then sections covering Sauces Dips and Dressings, Side Dishes, Chicken, Fish, Meat, Vegetables, Salads, Desserts and Juices and Drinks. The vast majority of recipes have accompanying photos to both inspire you and give you an approximation of how the dish should look. Use it as a guide only as cooking is an organic, personal process. I have tried many of these recipes and still love the classic Yaki Soba and Ebi Yakitori. One of my favourites, and one I suggest you try, is Salmon Korroke, which are like Japanese Salmon Croquettes and very delicious indeed.

A new style of cooking will always require some practise, but once you get the hang of the ingredients and techniques these dishes are very easy to rustle up, taste delicious and are usually quite healthy. Most ingredients can be found in large supermarkets, but some specialised ingredients may need to be sourced from an Asian/Japanese market, if you live near London I recommend the Japan Centre in regents street.

This may be a slightly polished advertisement for the restaurant and there are plenty of pictures of happy staff and customers inside, but when the recipes are this good and the food so tasty I can overlook this and really enjoy using this book in the kitchen. If you are looking for a sushi book then try the Yo Sushi book which offers both sushi and noodle dishes, but both books would compliment each other very well and offer a good introduction to this style of cuisine.

eloquent, dense prose situating cancer in IVF, screening, self-identity, malpractice realms-- a must-read for survivors

I'm a one year, post-treatment (surgery, chemo, radiation) woman "living in prognosis" with the specter of breast cancer.

This is a must-read for anyone diagnosed with breast cancer. Although, I can't decide if I would recommend it before you go through the whole treatment-decision making process or after. After reading it, I felt empowered, angry, sad, betrayed, and scared that this is only one of two books that I've come across so far (the other one being The Truth in Small Doses) that calls out on the carpet the way cancer research, pink fund-raising, and the "brave survivor" box breast-cancer patients are forced into are complicated, messy, frustrating things.

So yeah, reading it beforehand might give you the gumption to call into question doctor's opinions on chemotherapy or a too-short breast exam, or feel unwilling to demand test results right away because you're a "good" patient, but it also might leave you feeling depressingly frustrated with the complicated truth behind diagnosis, questions of prognosis and life expectancy, and options for treatment.

But this book is also a must-read because Jain is an anthropologist, and her perspective on the cancer industry in this book comes from some unexpected directions-- stances I had never considered or come across in other books: that of a misdiagnosed, potential malpractice suit plaintiff, queer, and politics of fertility (In Vitro) etc. And the prose is eloquent and dense.

Jain starts by acknowledging the shifting, complicated meanings inherent in the word "cancer" itself. Something I began to realize half-way through my own process. "Cancer" can be a death sentence when you first hear it from the nervous physician telling you the biopsy results, then it becomes a specific-sized tumor after surgery, and then something to be eradicated by various treatments, during treatment an identity you either show the world or try to hide, and then finally post-treatment, a constantly hovering presence. Jain writes of her doctor's office

"Cancer in all its nounishness, refers to everything...and nothing. Cancer pervaded the office, residing in each of these objects and people and the relations among them, but nowhere could it be specified as a thing. The main tumors were gone: cancer had only just begun."

Jain's identity leads her to delve into various and often-overlooked or over-simplified aspects of the cancer beast. Having undergone fertility treatments in order to be an egg donor, being misdiagnosed with breast cancer, and then undergoing treatment as a self-identified butch queer in a cancer culture that emphasizes makeup, wigs, and protheses, Jain calls into question the medical industry's screening practices, failure to divulge or acknowledge links between fertility treatments and environmental toxins to cancer, the "brave face" breast cancer patients are expected to put on, as well as the way tort law and malpractice law interacts with diagnoses of cancer.

Political? Yes. Well-written social science? Yes. Challenging and emotionally draining to read? Very much yes. Because after this, you can't keep the illusion of the "doctor mommy" who knows best. You will have to educate yourself and be your own advocate both as a patient and as someone living in the wider world with friends and family who are exposed to carcinogens.

We don't know why some cancer spreads. We don't know why some cancer is indolent for years and then becomes aggressive, nor do we know how much radiation exposure or environmental toxin or genetic susceptibility tips one over the edge into cancer-world.

And that makes me frustrated after all the fund-raising and "buying" pink that we as Americans do. Books like this help us focus on the real areas: improving doctor-patient relationships, insurance, screening practices, and research into causation.

A must read!

Lochlann Jain's willingness to expose her private thoughts and fears so publicly, about such an intensely personal scary time is truly admirable. It's her vulnerability and underlying strength woven throughout the story of the "business" of cancer that makes her book so powerful. Lochlann brilliantly puts into words what so many cancer patients (me included),were afraid to question, and for various reasons didn't have the voice, ability or courage to articulate. Her book is thought provoking; scaring me in parts with her insight into the chemicals used to treat cancer patients, reminding me of the conveyor belt feelings of being a patient, the conflicted feelings towards money making "pink" campaigns, and how grateful I am to have experienced excellent physicians and care. Reading Lochlann's book validated some of my feelings towards the treatment process and the business of fundraising for cancer. It's also prompted me to question the ethics of a society that produces masses of carcinogens while spending billions to treat cancer. I hope her book is widely read, and acts as a catalyst for discussion and change.

A masterpiece

It is a book by someone who suffered the worst of the desease, neglect by the specialist when the cancer was growing, several extensive surgical operations, chemotherapy, radiation, you name it. She survived, not to tell the tale so the reader would commiserate with her, but to thoroughly research Cancer in multiple fields and write a masterpiece; not just for academics but for the physicians, lawyers, politicians concerned with the welfare of their voters and not the least patients. A great work, it will be read and reread for years to come.

A Valuable Book

First, let me say that the "Legally English is Axiomatic" reviewer is incoherent. He also, sort of, wrote in English; and his comments are meaningless. The three people who considered his review valuable must be slightly insane.

This is a valuable book. However, it does contain some flaws. It uses recent political examples where frequently the settled facts are not clear. It seems ironic that a book teaching critical thinking should require its readers to already be critical thinkers when it comes to sortin out the authors political opinion. Furthermore, as a classroom text, these examples could spark debate that could distract the class from understanding the concept being taught. The book also has not been properly proof-read. There are occassional minor lapses in grammar and spelling: This can become mildly annoying. The books preface praising "Socrates" as he is found in Plato is also distressing. I am not certain that Socrates is the model critical thinker given that many of the claims of Platonism are explicitly anti-empirical. Last, the book should treat the relationship between epistemology and metaphysics to logic more deeply. For this see David Kelly's and H.W.B Joeseph's books.

The book does have many virtues though. Topics of rhetoric like evaluating sources and being aware of weasal words are covered in this book: These topics are rarely taught and certainly should be taught along with the other parts of logic. This is a major virtue. The excercises are well constructed and force the reader to apply his new found understanding to the world; his knowledge is not allowed to remain unconnected to his everyday thinking.

This is a very good book with some minor flaws.

Critical Thinking is a must in our complex world !

I like this book, because we need to learn again and again what type of thought process goes into
decision making, developing a belief system and knowing why you think the way you think. Unfortunately
in our world many believe things that have no evidence and is a repeat of what was told to them. It is of
great importance to look for scientific and medical evidence and reliable research and studies to give
some credibility to what we think is actually a part of our world. Otherwise we may believe myths, rumors,
superstitions, follow charismatic cult figures and listen to nonsense and call it fact.

I like this book and recommend it highly.

About the Author
Lindsay Watson has recently retired as Associate Professor of Classics at the University of Sydney. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. His major publications are Arae. The Curse Poetry of Antiquity (1991), A Commentary On Horace's Epodes (2003) and (with Patricia Watson) Martial: Select Epigrams (Cambridge, 2003). He is presently engaged on a brief monograph on Martial, co-authored with Patricia Watson.

Patricia Watson is an honorary associate of the Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Sydney, where she was Senior Lecturer in Latin prior to her retirement. She is the author of a monograph, Ancient Stepmothers: Myth, Misogyny and Reality (1995), as well as numerous articles on Roman poetry. This is her second volume for the Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics series, the first being a commentary on selected epigrams of Martial in 2003.

About the Author
Having both had careers in the hospitality industry, author Helen Jackman and her husband 'retired' to a small B&B in rural Kent which they have run successfully for over ten years. When they took what seemed at the time quite a brave step they could find no British publication aimed at this 'hobby' end of the market. This book was written to fill that gap and to help others enjoy opening their homes to guests. Helen is a Fellow of the Institute of Hospitality.

About the Author
Shannon Lee Wolf is a caul bearer. Born in Virginia, her parents divorced when she was two years old, just before the birth of her younger brother who was also born with the caul. Her mother remarried two years later when living in her hometown in New Hampshire. Their growing family moved eight times in eleven years, finally settling in the Green Mountain State of Vermont. Shannon has one sister and four brothers. She attended high school in Montpelier then left for Massachusetts at age eighteen to attend the Swain School of Design where she majored in graphic design. She married and had one son who now abides in North Carolina and is pursuing a career as a DJ. She divorced her husband after seventeen years and moved back to Vermont, where she took two semesters at Vermont College, studying psychology. She then achieved her life coaching certification from Spencer Institute’s online course out of California. As a practicing life coach, she led a women’s self-awareness group and wrote online articles. After a major procedure applied by her acupuncturist, Shannon was suddenly overwhelmed with images and a story – and she began to write her first piece of fiction. She finished and indie-published this piece, entitled "Dover Graye" in the spring of 2009. In 2012 she began revising and expanding Dover Graye and entitling it "Rhapsody for Dover Graye – The Boy Born of the Caul". Shannon now lives with her life partner and continues to write. She has also dedicated her life to the cause of caul bearers across the world, founding "Caul Bearers United - Lifting the Veil". She seeks to educate the general public on what the caul represents as well as lending a support system for caul bearers and their families. While Shannon suffers from the disabling affects of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia, she continues to write. Her upcoming project is a book of short stories. All I could think of was "That's me!"

"Beyond the Veil arrived at my home and I started reading and all I could think of"That's me!" Am almost 3/4 of the way through the book. It was well after 2 A.M. that I finally laid it down so I could get some sleep. It was so hard to put it down.

It felt like I was coming home, finding my lost family, and understanding what was written without having to think about it! What a book! Thank you so much for writing it, only wish it were longer as it is so good."

This book is not only an essential guide for the caul bearer but the authors wisdom is for all peoples , tribes and religions . It's a book I found to be chillingly accurate in describing my life as a bearer of the caul. A book dedicated to helping those of us who feel so alone and alienated from the rest of the wold . It's a beautiful guiding light in a world full of darkness. I look forward to all books that this author may publish in the future.

Being a call bearer

This book is amazing. I couldn't put it down and it is the first book I have finished completely in a very long time. The author presents details about questions and mysteries you are desperately searching for the answers to. So many of those answers are in this book. I can't get over how my deep longing for such answers quickly subsided from page one. This is a must read for any caul bearer and anyone suspecting of being or knowing a caul bearer.

About the Author

Burton G. Malkiel is the Chemical Bank Chairman's Emeritus Professor of Economics at Princeton University and the author of the bestselling A Random Walk Down Wall Street. Malkiel has served on the President's Council of Economic Advisers, as dean of the Yale School of Management, as chair of Princeton's Economics Department, and as a director of major corporations.

Charles D. Ellis is a consultant to large public and private institutional investors. For three decades, he was managing partner of Greenwich Associates, the international business strategy consulting firm. He has taught investing at both Harvard and Yale and is the author of fifteen books, including the bestselling Winning the Loser's Game.

Simply the best

Of all the investment books I've read in the past few months, this one is the best. It has the most practical advice, distilled into plain English, that anyone can understand. Thanks Burt and Charley for a wonderful book, and the updated edition is terrific. The newbie investor would benefit the most from reading this book, but I am recommending this book to everyone. As I told a colleague at work, if you can only read one book on investing, this is the one to read. I will also go back every couple of years and re-read this book. The information and advice is timeless.

Great gift for those who think investing is "too complicated."

This brief handbook of investing rules-of-thumb is one of the best of its kind. The updated edition expands on some recent topics, but mostly re-emphasizes the basics. Essentially, this is a short-hand distillation of the thinking presented at greater length in Malkiel's classic "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" and Ellis's "Winning the Loser's Game." I think most readers might enjoy reading these underlying books, e.g., the latest, 11th edition of Malkiel's book is due out in January 2015. Put this together with the volumes noted above (others are listed in a short "Recommended Reading" section at book's end) and all but professionals will have at hand 95% of what they will ever need to know about smart investing.

A great gift to family and friends who think that investing is just "too complicated" --- and not a bad thing for all of us to re-read from time-to-time!

Very good overview, written in an accessible way

nice general overview for the new and seasoned investor alike. Burton and Malkiel present their perspective on investment based on many decades of experience, and given their incredible, august pedigrees, it makes you stop and listen (made me listen, anyway). If you are already an index, Boglehead style investor, you will not hear anything new, but they definitely will drive what you already know home in your head. And they don't mind sharing their own thoughts and differing in opinion at times (for example, one suggests no bonds during the accumulation phase of investing, and the other suggests a modest-to-sizable bond position, although I forget who suggest what).

If you are a stock picker or fret about what the market is doing on a day-to-day basis, prepare to have your world rocked, though.
