Fell in love with a short story

This contemporary short story is a captivating look at love lost and love unexpectedly found under the most dire circumstances. Lanyon's superior writing talent, understanding of the military and of social issues combine to produce a heady, fast-paced action thriller set in war. The expert use of flashbacks allow us significant peeks into the past, which gives us meaningful insight into the present. Moments in this story are tender, comical, emotionally draining and so satisfying! When Vic and Sean are frantically trying to escape the Taliban and tell each other how they feel, it was ... well, I cried. Josh Lanyon writes romance to lust after and I do.

This story was first published as part of an anthology of short stories, so I find it distressing that some reviewers rate this work by its length instead of by the quality of the writing and storytelling. The short story remains a vital - although challenging to do well - genre. O'Henry must be turning over in his grave to learn that story length is, for some, a determiner of an author's worthiness. It's not about the length, it's about the rich, emotional moments and lovely characters Lanyon gives us. Well, that and the lyrical, articulate writing he consistently delivers.

A literal cliff hanger, Until We Meet Once More wastes not a word or a moment. The story covers a number of years and each vignette is sweet to bittersweet, almost painfully real and moving. There's a world of stories in this quick read and a lifetime of emotion. Many full length novels deliver less. Until We Meet Once More

Had to have this book for a graduate level radar class. Overall, the book isn't bad, but could use some updating. With upgrades being done with radars, there are new theories and techniques that are being used that I would liked to have gained from this book.

So, too, did they for the Russians, whose vast Empire required rail links capable of moving the Tsarist army quickly and competently. Just as importantly, railways could be vital for Imperial defence, as the British discovered on the North-West frontier of India.

A sci-fi film that can be enjoyed by non-sci-fi viewers

This sci-fi thriller can be enjoyed even by people who dislike sci-fi films and books. The sci-fi element, which has no relationship to reality other than as a parable, is essential to the plot but it is not overly complicated or too bizarre. In fact, the message of the film is thought-provoking and relevant. And the story is well-acted and entertaining.

Without revealing too much, Matt Damon's character meets and is attracted to the character played by Emily Blunt, who is also attracted to him. But there are forces, ruled by the "chairman," who does not want, for reasons that become clear in the film, the couple to form a relationship and marry. This "adjustment bureau" has the ability to manipulate circumstances to make sure that events happen as they want; in this case, to keep the couple apart.

Viewers can think of the "chairman" as God, and the "adjustment bureau" as divine angels who carry out the divine wishes. They can also see the film as addressing whether humans have free will and, if not, can they have at least some control over their lives; in this case, can Damon and Blunt defy the "chairman" and the "adjustment bureau" somehow and, if so, how and when?

Viewers can also ask themselves, should God control the world, especially when it is clear that the world is filled with evil people doing so much wrong?

Estelle Jussim is one of the most highly regarded and influential voices in photography and other media. Award-winning author of Slave to Beauty and the pioneering Visual Communication and the Graphic Arts, Jussim has charted new ground in the investigation of the meaning of images. This volume is the first compilation of her work.

Estelle Jussim writes, unconventionally, on the social impact of photography, refusing to subscribe to any narrow critical ideology. An art historian and a communications theorist, she incorporates postmodern, deconstructionist, and feminist viewpoints in her assessments of various photographers, movements, and institutions. Wide-ranging in interest, Jussim's writing is remarkably bold and controversial.

Divided into three-sections-- "Visual Communication," "Genres," and "Bio-History"-- The Eternal Moment includes essays that assess how aspects of the medium such as early wood-engraving or the role of the museum affect communication in a visual culture; survey various photographic subjects such as the nude, the landscape, and the ethnocentric icon; and reveal the work of some of the greatest practitioners of the medium.

In "Visual Communication" Jussim explores the interplay between technology and aesthetics in photography, and probes the unique, powerful relationship of photographs to time. The essay "Quintessences: Edward Weston's Search for Meaning," examines the discrepancies between that artist's pronouncements and his photographs.

Included in "Genres" is "Propaganda and Persuasion," in which Jussim offers astute observations on how meaning is produced, transmitted, and interpreted. In "Looking at Literati," she focuses on Jill Krementz's ability to capture the spark of personality in her portraits of writers. "Starr Ockenga's Nudes" is an insightful analysis of the ways in which that photographer's work has personalized the traditionally formal, impersonal genre of the nude.

In "Bio-History" Jussim's explorations of the lives and works of such important photographers as Barbara Crane, Carl Chiarenza, and F. Holland Day are models of their kind; her long essay on Jerome Liebling reveals a deep empathy for his essential mysticism and humanism.

Estelle Jussim has taught at the graduate school of Simmons College since 1972. She is the author of Stopping Time: The Photographs of Harold Edgerton; Landscape as Photograph (with Elizabeth Lindquist-Cock); Frederic Remington, the Camera, and the Old West; Slave to Beauty: The Eccentric Life and Controversial Career of F. Holland Day, Photographer, Publisher, Aesthete (winner of the New York Photographic Historical Society Prize for Distinctive Achievement in the History of Photography); and Visual Communication and the Graphic Arts: Photographic Techniques in the Nineteenth Century. She lives in Granby, Massachusetts.
