Pandey suggests that "woman" in medieval Japanese narratives does not constitute a self-evident and distinct category, and that there is little in these works to indicate that the sexed body was the single most important and overarching site of difference between men and women. She argues that the body in classical and medieval texts is not understood as something constituted through flesh, blood, and bones, or as divorced from the mind, and that in the Tale of Genji it becomes intelligible not as an anatomical entity but rather as something apprehended through robes and hair. Pandey provocatively claims that "woman" is a fluid and malleable category, one that often functions as a topos or figural site for staging debates not about real life women, but rather about delusion, attachment, and enlightenment, issues of the utmost importance to the Buddhist medieval world.

Pandey's book challenges many of the assumptions that have become commonplace in academic writings on women and Buddhism in medieval Japan. She questions the validity of speaking of Buddhism's misogyny, women's oppression, passivity, or proto-feminism, and points to the anachronistic readings that result when fundamentally modern questions and concerns are transposed unreflexively onto medieval Japanese texts. Taking a broad, interdisciplinary approach, and engaging widely with literature, religious studies, and feminism, while paying close attention to medieval texts and genres, Pandey boldly throws down the gauntlet, challenging some of the sacred cows of contemporary scholarship on medieval Japanese women and Buddhism.

Pandey strikes a very fine balance between the emic and the etic by using her interpretive exercise to reflect back on, and trouble, the mind-body and other dualisms that inhere in the provincial concerns of the modern, concerns that her own work―she acknowledges―cannot quite escape. It's one of those books that come out of nowhere almost literally just when the world needs it most.

But a great saint Th r se of Lisieux was so taken by this book that it spurred her entry into the convent. "Reading this book was one of the greatest graces of my life," she says in her autobiography. "The impression I received from it is too sweet to express. All the great truths of religion and the mysteries of eternity plunged into my soul a happiness not of this earth."

Completed in 1881 by an aged French priest, this remarkable book surfaced long enough to draw Th r se into the convent and then, for more than a century, plunged back into obscurity.

In it, Fr. Arminjon gets right to the point: "The end of the world, Christ says, will come when the human race, sunk in the depths of indifference, is far from thinking about punishment and justice. "Civilization will be at its zenith, markets overflowing with money, and stocks will never have been higher. Mankind, wallowing in unprecedented material prosperity, will have ceased to hope for heaven. Crudely attached to pleasures, man will say 'My soul, you have goods to last for many years. Eat, drink and be merry.' "

Doesn't that sound eerily like America just a year or so ago?

Fr. Arminjon insists that we "steer clear of every perilous opinion and make no assertion that is not justified by Tradition and the doctrine of the Fathers." Yet it's precisely his sober reliance on Scripture and Tradition that makes this book so convincing . . . and so chilling!

But Fr. Arminjon doesn't merely sketch the darkness ahead; he also shows how Jesus will fill that darkness with light; and he details the rich bounty Christ has in store for all who stay faithful.

Well-done presentation of Catholic end-times theology

A grandiloquent previous reviewer and the synopsis of the book point out the importance of this book to St. Therese, so I won't go into that here. I think it stands well enough on its own even despite its connection to the Little Flower.
I would divide this book into three sections: first, it presents a Catholic end-times theology, and details the coming of the Antichrist, Resurrection of the Dead, and Last Judgment. Next, it discusses Purgatory, Heaven, and Hell. Finally, it discusses the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and suffering, which of course deal with this world but have consequences in the hereafter. The chapters of the book are actually conferences that Fr. Arminjon presented, and since they were initially delivered as speeches they are easy reading despite the wealth of information they contain. The translation is excellent.
With the popularity of the Left Behind series and the importance of end-times theology to the Evangelical Protestant community, it's nice to have a presentation of Catholic eschatology. I've had a hard time finding a book that does what this one does--namely presenting what exactly will happen when the time comes for Christ to return. Catholics place less of an emphasis on this than Protestants, but it's still a part of our religion and needs to be understood. This book was written before the historical-critical interpretation of scripture became prevalent in the Catholic Church, and so prophesy is interpreted literally instead of being explained away as a metaphor only relevant to the ancient author. It's frightening, but living life with one eye fixed on the four last things will make anyone a better Christian.

A protestant who really enjoyed this book

I am an old time Pentecostal that began attending a conservative, pro-life Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod) because I believe in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. I still believe in tongues, so I guess that makes me a Charismatic Lutheran.
Father Arminjon's lectures covered two topics in particular that blessed me.
One was the chapter on Purgatory. Protestants believe that our works and deeds done in the Body will be tried by fire because St. Paul wrote that. Nowhere does it tell us how long and how severe the fire will be, so the doctrine of Purgatory is not too hard for me as a Protestant to believe.
The second reason I give this book a great recommendation is the last chapter on Christian suffering as the means of redemption. Protestants throw the baby out with the bath water when we reject the doctrine of redemptive suffering. Even though I am not fully convinced that we play a part in our redemption through suffering, I do see that it is a powerful means of purgation in this world. We grow through our sufferings, and while most Protestants agree with this, we may tend to avoid it more than we should, at least that has been my own personal experience.
I am trying with God's grace to not only accept my sufferings but to embrace them. This is a hard thing to do, and I keep falling away from it, but this book helps remind me to do it.

Less prophecy, more a model for religious concepts.

I think I enjoyed the father's essay on penance at the end within the index more than the entire work. Its hard edge and dogged simplicity echoes with the same high chord as any of the superb dialogues of the saints. It plucked pretty intense emotions in me. If you make it through the rest, don't let yourself miss this last gem. It's almost as if he were holding back until this moment. It wasn't free, but it was worth it. He stretches some ideas about the paradise to be and has a limited view of the judgement to come - but that is most folks. I just had to stop myself from going on a tangent about it. Phew. Fr. Arminjon has a beautiful view of the sacraments, and as darling as the continuation of the marriage oath in the afterlife might be for some, it is not as The Lord said we would be 'As the angels in heaven, neither given or taken in marriage' when asked about the woman that had had seven husbands. Once again, his points on redemptive, selfless, and meditative living was of much greater value, at least to me, than what seems greatly supposition on his part on what the second coming will exactly be and just when exactly Armageddon shall be or in how many parts, when or at the same time. None of that will be answered here.

Thank you Father Gerard

There were two English poets who immediately resonated with me as a teenager and who have kept faith with me in all these years. One is John Donne and the other is Gerard Manley Hopkins. Both first met at 14 at the Singapore American School courtesy of a English Literature class, there was an almost electric connection, which if I had been more self-aware would have told me something about my own sense of aesthetics (lacking) and tastes (more intellectual than sensuous).
In high school, boarding school and college I think Wreck of the Deutschland was my favorite - when I actually figured out how "sprung rhythm" worked I believe I shouted for joy and did a little dance around my room. Only gradually did I come to appreciate the accuracy of the Windhower, depicted in the sound of the poem. The poems dealing directly with religion however remained a closed door.
This lasted until last year, a year of unexpected and devastating loss. And in the worst hours I turned to: John Donne and Gerard Manley Hopkins, and found profound comfort in both, and finally I understood that last, bitter, heartbreaking poem that Father Gerard wrote and learned what it was to "wrestle with (my God) my God" - "Carrion Comfort".

One of the great poetic geniuses of all English Literature- A Richness so rare no Ripeness could be greater

Reading the early poems one immediately understands how great and conscious an effort Hopkins made to transform himself into a distinctive poetic voice.

Hopkins did not write a great deal( Compare his spare output to the reams of Wordsworth) but he wrote a number of poems which are, in my judgment, among the greatest in the language. He did this by creating a distinctive diction, and rhythm of his own.

The sprung rhythm which he employed had its origin in his reading of Anglo- Saxon poetry, with its emphasis on scanning the strong stresses alone. The alliterative quality of his verse also has its origin in early Anglo- Saxon poetry.

But Hopkins infuses his work with an intensity of meaning, a richness so rare no ripeness could be greater.

Among the truly great poems in this collection my favorites are"," Thou Art Indeed Just Lord", " God's Grandeur" " and Felix Randal."

This is great great poetry, and among the greatest written about human suffering.

Emily Dickinson would have felt a chill down her spine at reading it. And for Kafka it would have most certainly broken up the icy- sea within.

I am a great fan of Hopkins. His work touches not merely the intellect, but the soul with its depth of insight and tenderness. There is a richness to his work that many of the poets who were his contemporaries lacked. There is faith, hope, love, and a respect for the universe and its Creator. Another beautiful Penguin Classic collection. Every library personal and public should have a copy.

It is what's needed!!

I'm not sure why it took so long for me to read this timeless classic, (ok, my daughter made me read it & i have to present her a book report) but one thing's for certain..you've got a huge fan in me.

It has everything...the rags, the struggle, the character development, the deceit, the riches & finally, the happy ending...

My god-daughter was playing "Annie" in a stage production. I bought this an opening night gift. She loved it! She especially liked that the book had sequences directly quoting the stage script.

Informational, but a little boring

This book has a lot of great statistics on bullying, but it can be rather boring to read. The second half of the book grabs your attention a little more, as it starts to give tips on what to do about cyber bullying.

About the Author
E. R. A. Sewter was a well-known Byzantine scholar and the editor of Greece and Rome. His translation of The Alexiad of Anna Comnena is still published in Penguin Classics. He died in 1976.

The Test of Time

I was first hooked on Byzantine history after picking up a copy of John Julius Norwich's abridged History of Byzantium. This led to an abiding interest in the second half of the Roman Empire.
Psellus' turn of phrase and genuine storytelling ability make this book a pleasure to read. I only regret I cannot read it in its original Greek, for I think it would be even better. Despite the bias against his female compatriots (only to be expected in that era) Psellus remains fresh, authoritative, winning, and as balanced as can be expected. I love the Penguin editions of classic works- I rarely buy anything else- and my copy of the Chronographia is already dog-eared and underlined.
In short, I truly recomment this edition for any serious or leisurely student of Byzantium. Psellus gives us a window into a sorely misunderstood time and age- as well as being able to tell a ripping good story when the mood takes him.

Psellus is fantastic; Highly-Recommended

I completely recommend Michael Psellus to anyone who wants to understand a bit more about the Byzantines and this very harsh period of time in their history. Psellus is fun to read, his commentaries are often humorous, and he seems genuinely interested in preserving this period of time as more of a memoir that tries to place together the good and the bad aspects of life. Before his commentary on Constantine IX, he notes that the position of historian, just as the position of emperor, is a very complex one -- you can try your hardest to do it as accurately as possible, but, in the end, one realizes that most people are complex and cannot be quantified in words or even pages, particularly via using the words of other subjective humans. The reviewer at the bottom concerns himself with Western pipedreams; Psellus' (or Psellos') account is a memoir from events that happened in his life, it is *not* a play-by-play logbook.

The most readable book by a Byzantine historian.

I am not an expert on Byzantine history, but I'm not ignorant of it either. For such a one as myself, this book offers an enjoyable insight into what life was like at that time, in that place, and I must say that it was one of the most dynamic and interesting societies ever to exist. As for the author himself, his style was wholly unlike the stuffy, dull writings to be found among his Western contemporaries. It's informative, to the point, and even (gasp) mildly humorous at times. Buy it.

Very good book. There has been a lot of helpful info to help me better understand the use of industrial Vacuum in general. With the knowledge gained, I have been able to design a better system for vacuum work holding for production machining.

Don' Waste Your Money

The information in the text is very basic and adds nothing of value for anyone with even a modicum of engineering experience. There is no mention of laboratory vacuum practice or high-vacuum manufacturing techniques such as used in semiconductor processes.

The Kindle version of this book is almost useless. The tables and figures are either missing or unreadable. This book was a great disappointment to me, especially at the price charged. Perhaps someone starting a maintenance job in an older manufacturing plant would find it useful. If you consider buying it for that purpose, get a paper copy, not the Kindle version.
