Much of the atrocities committed by the Japanese are now known to most historians, but by far, the most despicable and forgotten act against humanity committed by the Imperial Japanese government was its covert biochemical weapons program. Euphemistically labelled as the "Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification Department" of the Imperial Japanese Army, the Japanese conducted a wide range of cruel and inhumane experiments on prisoner who were often innocent.
Under the leadership of Dr. Shiro Isshi, the department subjected 3,000-250,000 innocent men, women, and children to cruel experiments and medical procedures that were carried out by the brightest medical students and staff that Imperial Japan had to offer. In a bid to develop its own germ warfare capability, the government of Imperial Japan resorted to incredibly deprived and inhumane methods of experimentation, like infecting prisoners with virulent strains of anthrax, plague, cholera, and other diseases. These prisoners were often subject to excruciating vivisections without the use of anesthesia in order to observe the real-time effects of these deadly diseases.
Perhaps the most shocking development after the war was that the perpetrators of this heinous crime against humanity have largely escaped persecution unlike their Nazi counterparts in Europe. In a cowardly attempt to escape persecution by the Soviets, Dr. Shiro Isshi and his staff were able to trade the information obtained from their experiments with the Americans in return for immunity in the Tokyo Trials.

A short readable account of the horrors of unit 731

This book (Unit 731: The Forgotten Asian Auschwitz) is a short but interesting read. This book describes the notorious unit 731 of the Japanese army during World War II. This book has numerous footnoted references, and a fairly extensive list of references that someone could read to find out more information about unit 731. I guess the laboratory results that the US received offset the crimes of these individuals, since so few were ever punished. This book describes man's inhumanity better than some of the horror books. I highly recommend that this book be read. The author did a good job.

"See Ya"

In the beginning of the book, the author states: " Ishii visited Europe in the 1920s, but the main reason for his visits were to investigate the status and progress of Nazi Germany's biological warfare research." Huh? Is there an alternate universe that this book came from? Nazi Germany in1920s? That is a "see ya" moment when a "Historian" has no idea of Germany and when the Nazi's assumed power. The NSDAP gathered 3% or the vote in 1924 and 2.6% in 1928. In 1928, they held 12 of 491 seats. Was there biological weapons research being conducted at beer halls in Bavaria?

Just that one incredible error puts anything in the book into question. That alone made me send it to cyberspace.

Growing up in China, I always hear about these horror stories of Japanese invasion. I wish more people in the west would hear about it. Thank you so much Derek for doing this work of justice. One must read Unit 731 to understand current day biological weapon.

Dated, but still a fun read

"The Art of Halo: Creating a Virtual World" was written at the time between Halo 1 and 2, and as such it balances its time between giving you insight into the design of Halo and doing its best to highlight the differences that were coming in Halo 2. The images are the best quality for the way both games looked at the time, but more importantly the book does a nice job of breaking down the categories of design, dedicating separate sections to Bungie's history, the story, and then each individual element of the games: weapons, aliens, vehicles, etc.

If you're interested in a nice pictorial history of the early days of Halo, "The Art of Halo: Creating a Virtual World" is a fun read. There are newer more thorough books now, but I still enjoyed this one immensely.

Pretty cool but outdated

The Art of Halo is something that every major fan of the halo universe and Halo's art should have. The book itself is of good quality; you won't find weak binding or cheap manufacturing problems here. The book covers pretty much all of the basic topics you might expect, from character studies to weapon designs and environment studies. All in all i was hoping to be surprised a little more, this book covered all the typical topics that might be expected but didn't have anything too special. However, the art was great and it covered the many stages of development that the various species, machines and characters went through.
On a side note, i was somewhat misled by the title to assume that this book would cover the more modern games in the halo franchise, only to find that it was made apparently before the second game even came out, which was the biggest disappointment for me, but i guess that's my fault for not doing a little more research on it. I later found that "Art of Halo 3" was much more of what i was looking for, but apparently it is now a rare collectible and currently around $500. Sure hope they reprint a second edition sometime for cheaper. . .

The Art of HALO: Creating a Virtual World is a book that must be a part of your Halo collection. Much like the Halo Encyclopedia, The Art of Halo demonstrates all the character designs of different versions to the final product. This goes for all the different locations in the Halo Universe. Ranging from:

Environments.
Vehicle Design.
Character Uniform Study.
To the Weapons and Gear.

The artwork and amount of detail that Bungie has put into the Halo franchise is outstanding. The created worlds and level of design is beautiful.

Although i did expect a little more out of the book, but it is still a great book for your collection.

Just another PMI Standard... But lots good concepts inside!

I find this book (just like the rest of PMI's standards) a very important reference for those wishing to acquire the "text book" knowledge, and very important for certification purposes.
But if you are looking for practical knowledge, and details on how to implement OPM3 on your organization, or on clients, then I recomend other books like "Every Organization can implement OPM3".

Very few content and the 151 questions to the self-assessment doesn't help too much. Well, if you want some documentation about OPM3 this is a "must have" but don't expect too much.

Out of date. Too much has happened and the model does not perform in this condition considering ISP, ITIL and COBIT 5. The Maturity assessment is not current. This is good to learn basics.

Good reference learned a lot

Book is good but the title is a little deceiving. Quite often it states, Paraphrasing, "buy our other book if you really want more specifics on field design". However I did learn alot and it is a good reference.

The Best Technical Reference on Baseball Fields I could find

I used this technical reference book for a course in Contracts and Procurement, in which I had to write detailed specifications for a baseball park. These specifications were part of a Request for Proposal to a fictitious group of general contractors.

This book left no stone unturned, educating me on all aspects of building and maintaining a ball diamond. My professor, who had seen many similar papers before, was impressed and I received a perfect mark.

I also interviewed a general contractor who was building 8 baseball fields, and found I was able to talk intelligently with him, and knew all the various terms and types of materials used in a baseball field, as a direct result of reading this book.

I was impressed with the overall knowledge of the authors, starting with how to grade the park for maximum drainage and playability, fencing, types of turf required for various weather zones in North America, pest and weed prevention, layout, dimensions, equipment used for maintaining and marking the field -- there wasn't one thing I wanted to know that I couldn't find in this book.

I recommend it very highly.

A fine book for all classical musicians

This is an inspiring and helpful book by a master musician and teacher. Several topics that I, as a classical violinist, found particularly interesting and useful are: accompaniment techniques, the rhythmic techniques of hocket and polyrhythms, modes, and Latin music (which works particularly well played in a classical style). The book is a good size (you can actually get through it), with lots of written examples, and sound advice. P.S. Although Friesen is a ‘cellist, the application to other classical instruments, particularly strings, is easy.

serious cello work

for cellists who want to explore what you can do with a cello in all sorts of musical / performance settings, this is the book for you. It requires working through - it's not a breezy "how to", it's something you work with. I admit to not always having the time or patience to follow it in detail, but it's there if you want it. So the missing star is more me than the book! It's a great book and I'm a less great cello student.

Don't judge a book by its cover

I stumbled upon this very talented man on youtube after whiling away an afternoon looking for someone who plays the style of cello i want to; i visited his website, i bought the book here.
i was very excited when the book arrived but once i opened it i realised it wasn't for me. all the music is written in treble clef & doesn't suit the cello!'
so while i appreciate what eugene is saying in the book, it would take me a month of sundays to transpose everything to bass clef & play it on my cello.
very disappointing.

I got the idea of an HIV-positive person wanting to spread the virus when I was reading an article about how some children had the virus due to mother-to-child transmission. I wondered how they felt: angry or depressed? I was certain they would be socially marginalized; even they had done nothing wrong.

That idea mushroomed into something bigger: the fight for fairness. Eventually, I called my manager and told her that I was going to write something very different; that it might compromise sales as my readers, who are used to my romance or family novels, might not be comfortable with the subject matter. My manager said, "You're the author. You're calling me to inform, not to seek for permission." That made sense; I think I have a great idea, I like to write it and I don't care about sales. So I wrote it. As expected, even after so many years, the sales of this book is not as good as my other books.

Nevertheless, I did not regret, for the effort I have put into this book is intense. While writing the book, I was serving my two-year mandatory national service as a soldier (every male Singaporean has to go through it), and as in any organization, there is unfairness. I remember all the emotions and dissociate into an angry man, just so to reduplicate the emotions in the story.

The result is Lilith--the story about two people who desire to be hunters. Both seek to end something; both are angry; both are obsessed with their goals. This is so different from my other books that some of my readers, upon buying it, give it to their friends. They still prefer my other books.

However, I still believe this is one of my better books; not in terms of sales, but in terms of my personal preference.

You may read only read once to understand the story, but to truly appreciate the subtext, you'll want to read twice to connect the dots. You won't however regret reading it twice.

Not wanting to provide any spoilers, this thin, dark tale tells the story of a Chinese woman who is HIV-positive due to parent-to-child transmission. Sadly, she is rejected and marginalized by her community. Teachers wouldn't teach her, her classmates sat far away from her, and even servers refused to serve her. Hell breaks loose when her boyfriend, who did not know about her HIV status prior, decides to leave her.

The premise seems simple and dark, but in my second read, I realize it's actually more than that. It's a scary reminder that things are not always so simple. Low Kay is NOT focusing on how dreadful the virus is, but how dreadful society is. The twist at the ending portrays everything with one sentence.

I recommend this to everyone - just read it twice instead before judging it.

A very dark tale

I am pretty surprised that a twenty-something can write a story with such a dark theme. Though it lacks good language and figurative elements, the theme overshadows all the shortcomings.

The story starts simple, with Stella (later renaming herself Lilith) seducing men and then telling them that she has HIV after they have sex. As the author delves into the protagonist, I begin to feel the protagonist's anger and motivations. Her first boyfriend ditched her after thinking that she is HIV, and even waiters refuse to serve food to her, in fear of contamination. It's precisely this very reason that Stella loses hope in humanity.

The ending is shocking, and without the twist, the story would have just gotten a simple three stars. With one sentence, the author changes everything, and makes a dark story even darker.

Highly recommended. However, it would be nice if the author had explained the anomalies pertaining to the writing style. Many words are misspelled for some reason, and readers should have been informed prior to reading it. I only know the reason halfway through the book (the narrator is a dyslexic).

Lilith tells a dark tale about a woman who is facing injustice since her birth. When Lilith was born, she was deemed to be HIV positive, and everyone avoided her like a plague. Eventually, she could no longer control her anger and began spreading the virus by seducing man.

The beginning of the story is much like a hunting game, with Lilith searching for her prey and a man determined to find her for destroying his brother's life. I would recommend this book only because of what happened at the later part of the story, when the motives of the characters are disclosed. The twist at the end literally leaves me dumbfounded. Is Lilith spreading the virus, or the stigma? It is a book that can be read in an hour, and it is a book that makes us wonder: how much injustice can one carry? You'll have to read twice to understand some of the weird writing style, like the reasons for the words' spelling and Lilith's weird habits. Thumbs-up to Low Kay for this amazing book.
